Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song was one of the most revolutionary games of its generation. It introduced players to a non-linear adventure where player choice dictated the story.
The sequel, Romancing SaGa -Minstrel song Remastered, carries that legacy forward in all the right ways. This remaster for PS5, PS4, Nintendo Switch, Steam and iOS brings HD visuals, refined gameplay and new content to this classic.
Free Scenario System
The Free Scenario System in Romancing SaGa – Minstrel Song is a unique and fascinating concept that allows players to travel and explore the world as they see fit. Rather than following a linear “main” storyline, each of the eight protagonists has their own separate journey featuring questions of identity, destiny, and belonging.
A great feature of this gameplay system is the ability to recruit party members, who will then help you in battle. You can also choose to unlock new abilities, which can be used when battling enemies.
Despite this freedom, the game’s battling systems are still very similar to most JRPGs. Instead of leveling up, characters will learn new abilities and gain stats randomly after winning battles.
Whether you’re a veteran or just looking to try something different, Romancing SaGa – Minstrel song is an excellent choice for fans of this series. It’s one of the highlights from this week’s batch of eShop releases, so check it out!
Multiple Characters
There are eight characters to choose from in Romancing SaGa – Minstrel Song, with each of them having their own story. These stories may overlap or intertwine as you complete adventures.
The game does not use experience points to level up; instead, characters gain new skills from actions taken during combat. This can be slow compared to other games in the series, but it makes advancing each character more rewarding.
This is especially true for Albert, who can unlock new sword abilities at random if he keeps using his sword during battles. Recruiting no-name characters from the pub in any town will make their stats increase, but this could lead to them stealing those boosts from your other characters.
Thankfully, it’s easy to dismiss characters from the game and recruit new ones without having to go back to the beginning of your adventure. Additionally, there’s a Minstrel character in every bar who can tell you interesting tales about each character.
Multiple Endings
Romancing SaGa – Minstrel Song offers multiple endings, and it is possible to experience all three in a single playthrough. Despite its complexity, it’s still an engrossing adventure that can be enjoyed by players who are willing to invest their time and patience into it.
In the world of Mardias, eight different protagonists share a quest to stop the revival of an ancient god of destruction, and each will tackle this story from a different point of view. Albert and Jamil, for example, begin the game as heirs to noble houses, but they also share a common antagonist.
At the beginning, you’ll be introduced to some myths that describe Mardias’s past, but the main narrative isn’t brought into focus until later on in the game. It’s a refreshing break from the standard lore-rich prologues that have become the norm for many RPGs today. That makes the game more accessible to newcomers, while ensuring there is still a story worth following.
Open World
Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Song isn’t your typical JRPG. It’s one that’s largely about freedom of exploration and discovery.
It’s not without its flaws, however, and some of its nuances will take a bit of getting used to, but it’s certainly worth the time spent on it. Whether you’re an experienced veteran or just a casual player, Romancing SaGa -Minstrel song is a cult classic worth revisiting for any JRPG fan.
Aside from being a non-linear experience, Romancing SaGa -Minstrel Songs Remastered also features an iconic turn-based combat system that’s unique to the series. Every weapon can be configured to perform in either an attack, defense, or trick mode, and even individual weapons can be equipped with their own set of skill.
This makes it a great choice for players who enjoy mixing and matching their party members, as the game will provide a variety of characters to choose from throughout the journey. Newly recruitable characters like Marina, Monica and Flammer help add more depth to the battles, while the sorceress Aldora brings back some memorable bosses that were absent in the original release.
