Paperback Vol. 2 Game Review

February 1, 2023

Paperback is a word-building game that mixes scrabble-like words with deck-building. Each hand, players form words and buy more powerful letters that will boost their score.

Based on the bestselling card game, Paperback Vol 2 brings new cards, modes and art. It also includes advanced computer players that can challenge the best players or work alongside you in cooperative mode.

Gameplay

The unique word deck-building game Paperback is back with a sequel that introduces a large selection of new cards for players to apply their skills to. In addition, the game features a cooperative mode that has players working together against an AI opponent as they try to create the highest scoring words possible. The game also includes a number of expansions, including new playable characters and attack cards. The game also includes a save/load feature that can be used to reload the last saved game and continue playing without having to start from the beginning. Compared to other games in the series, Paperback Vol. 2 offers a challenging gameplay experience and is well worth playing. It is a must-have for fans of the Paperback card game and word deck building genre.

Graphics

If you’re a fan of scrabble-like word building games and roguelike deckbuilding games, you’ll have no trouble picking up Paperback Vol. It’s a 1-4 player game with some nice looking graphics. You can play against the AI and friends, both locally and online with asynchronous multiplayer. The best part is that you can have several games on the go at once. It’s a good ol’ fashioned card game and while it might not have all the bells and whistles, it is a pretty fun time waster. It’s a great way to pass the time and you can play in small groups or solo.

The most impressive feature of the game is the massive card set and as you play, it will unlock a series of cleverly designed cards that will make your words and your board look better than ever. The game even has a little bit of an educational component to it too, in the form of a clever word puzzle that is genuinely fun to solve. It also has a very well executed asynchronous multi-player mode that lets you play up to four players at once and is a great way to get some extra friends to join in the fun.

Cooperative mode

In the cooperative mode, players try to work with each other to buy the wild cards as they go through a pyramid of cards. The goal is to buy enough wilds to take down the pyramid and win.

The cooperative mode works well for local and online play. The AI is good, and the game can handle up to four people if you want.

This is a really fun word-building game with a lot of potential. It’s not as great as the original digital board game, but it’s still a solid option if you don’t have the original or aren’t too attached to it. You can even play it online using asynchronous lobbies, which is a pretty cool feature. If you’re not super addicted to the original then this probably isn’t for you, but if you like it and you don’t mind the asynchronous lobbies then it’s a great addition to your video game library.

AI

If you’re new to the game, Paperback Vol. 2 is a video game adaptation of the popular word deckbuilding game that sees players trying to score as many points as possible by creating words using the letters in their hands.

The game features some really lovely artwork and you can play against the AI or local players. It also has asynchronous online multiplayer so you can play against friends at the same time.

There are four new fighters to unlock in this edition: Achilles, Bloody Mary, Yennega and Sun Wukong. Each of them has some pretty unique mechanics that I don’t think have been seen before. For example, Yennega’s attack cards have a bonus attack that starts a new combat after resolution- this feels a little bit overtuned though.
